Remember the rougarou Supernatural cameo? Yes, if you weren’t aware, in season 4, episode 4 of the hit television show Supernatural, Sam and Dean went toe to toe with a rougarou. This was the first time we’d heard of this mythical beast, and we’ve been fascinated ever since. The rougarou Supernatural style was extremely creepy, so much that we winced at the idea of it. In one scene, he begins to get sick and eats raw meat in his kitchen. The character enters a slow descent, until he finally begins to shapeshift and turn into a werewolf.
It’s, hands down, one of the most terrifying episodes, because I’ve always been afraid of shapeshifting against my will. When the kid from the original Jumanji started turning into a monkey, I freaked out, and my family never let me live it down. It became somewhat of a running gag in my family, as they made fun of my fear of Jumanji for years. The rougarou Supernatural episode is essentially the Jumanji episode, except now I’m an adult.

Legends of the beast have circulated the state for years, saying it’s a half-man, half-beast that roams the hills at the night. In the past, parents used the legend to scare their children in order to keep them in line, telling them the Supernatural rougarou would come after them if they did wrong. It’s the most popular Louisiana monster, and we speak about it often so the folklore never dies.
